He became the secretary of the National Aid and Volunteers Dependents Fund and joined the Sinn Fein political party. In the general elections, he was elected as Member of Parliament. Instead of joining the House of Commons at Westminster, he helped create the new Assembly of Ireland in Dublin. called "The Irish National Aid Association" and "The Irish Volunteers' Dependents' Fund" had been launched in Dublin and elsewhere for the purpose of collecting funds to help the dependents of Volunteers interned in Frongoch and elsewhere. Those two organisations were amalgamated a short time later and eventually became "The Irish White Cross".
